project 77
sustainability

In 2021, eduKenya purchased a plot of 15 acres in Mitaboni, Kenya with plans to develop the area into the future long-term home of Chelezo High School.

With architectural designs laid out for the future school, we wondered: how can we prepare for what’s to come, and maximize our resources now?

The idea for a sustainable farming project was born. By building necessary infrastructure and growing the most efficient crops, we could implement our harvest into eduKenya’s Feeding Program, and sell additional, highly-profitable crops on the market to funnel resources into our operations.

But every farmer knows, there is no growth where there is no water.

Enter The Well Coffeehouse, a nonprofit cafe based in Nashville, TN that strives to turn coffee into water. Their unique model enables them to fund water projects with like-minded organizations who strive to make immediate, and eternal impact by providing clean and safe water to those in need.

After sharing our vision with the Well’s team, they generously agreed to support the drilling of a borehole well, as well as the installation of a solar-powered pump to irrigate the land and serve our students for decades to come.

Long term impact

Food costs are eduKenya’s second-largest expense. Upon completion of this borehole, we will be able to be less dependent on international markets that effect our suppliers and reduce our food costs. Additionally, we will be able to bring highly profitable food to market and support our school’s operational budget. This property will be the long-term home of Chelezo High School, where 125 students and 25 staff and countless other lives will be touched each year by a Christ centered, transformational education.

Who are our friends at the well coffeehouse?

At The Well, their mission is turning coffee into water. Since 2012, they’ve been dedicated to creating welcoming coffeehouses where they love their customers and invite them into a greater story.

“Our passion for exceptional coffee—from meticulous sourcing and roasting to serving the perfect cup—drives our commitment to global impact. We use our profits to fund clean water wells and address safe water needs across the globe. By fostering a community that shares in this mission, we aim to inspire others to extend that love and make a difference. Thanks to our supporters, tens of thousands now have access to safe water. To reach even further, both locally and globally, we are expanding our impact through our coffeehouses, wholesale partnerships, and e-commerce platforms. By leveraging these avenues, we can build more connections and create even greater change.”

The Well has partnered on 76 projects in 24 countries, donated over $423,000, and directly impacted over 145,000 with clean water, health, & dignity.
