“He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives… to comfort all who mourn… bestow a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” Isaiah 61:1b-3a
A Broken BoyJoram, 16, has endured much heartache in his short life. After his father died when he was young, and his mother became his rock. In November 2015, while Joram was sitting for his KCPE exams, his mother became ill and was hospitalized. The school allowed him to take some of his examination by his mother’s side in the hospital. She passed away that week, and Joram was devastated. Life as he knew it came to a halt and Joram moved through each day in a haze. His aunt moved him from Western Kenya to Nairobi after he had difficulty living with another relative. She enrolled him in the newly formed Mawewa High School for the Fall 2016 term. Relocating to Nairobi, attending Freshman Orientation Week, and moving to the boarding school in Naivasha culminated in overwhelming distress for Joram - he was broken and for the first three days, he would not speak a word to anyone. In those early weeks, teachers and students stood in the gap for the hurting young man - praying, listening, and encouraging. Through them, God performed a mighty work in Joram’s heart and mind. Today, Joram is an outgoing young man with an infectious smile and a quirky sense of humor. Joram attributes the transformation to God and to finding himself in a safe space, with students and teachers who accept him and help him know that he can have a bright future despite such a difficult start. Joram is grateful for the school’s Care Groups, where students share their challenges, read God’s Word, and pray together.Joram is enjoying the high school experience - especially the excellent, filling meals! He is not shy about admitting his struggles in Kiswahili and Social Studies, but he has quickly improved in his lessons. Joram dreams of becoming a scientist. Outside of the classroom, he enjoys playing soccer, is apparently an accomplished dancer, and sometimes preaches in the Mawewa School Sunday services.Joram says, “I thank God for Mawewa School. My life has changed, and I have changed.” His fellow students attest to this. They have seen Joram transform from a surly, hurting person to an outgoing person who is helpful and responsible. We at eduKenya thank God for using this ministry to transform the lives of so many hurting and broken children.
