Elizabeth charmed Director Bob Kikuyu from Day 1[/caption]

On the first day of school, a little girl in the Preprimary 1 Class put smiles on the faces of every adult in the room. As students and staff gathered for assembly, Elizabeth approached each teacher and shook their hand.

Elizabeth was not outfitted in the Mawewa School uniform on that first day because her mother could not yet afford more than a blue jacket and school shoes.

In February, when noted photographers, Tony and Amy Hoffer, were visiting Mathare, they were able to join Elizabeth and her mother in the early morning hours as they prepared for the school day.

After several weeks of school, Elizabeth has proven to be a child of contradictions. Quiet and introverted at one moment - outgoing and confident the next. Behaviors found within the social-emotional development compass of 4-year olds worldwide!

Mostly, Elizabeth is quite personable, looks forward to school each day, and makes quick friends with the other children.

Elizabeth says she likes school - especially learning to read and playing with the other students.

She is quite smitten with her PP1 teacher, Ms. Edita Orinda. Ms. Orinda says that Elizabeth is highly observant and shows signs of being a leader among her classmates.
