Gideon and Glorious[/caption]Gabriel Chege, raised in a poor family in Murang’a, 53 miles north of Nairobi, relocated to urban Mathare after high school in 1992. He is married to Linfleviah Wairimu and is the proud father of Gideon (12) and Glorious (7). Glorious is a Class Two student at Mawewa School and Gideon attends sixth grade at a different school. In Kenya, Gabriel is known as “Baba Gideon” and “Baba Glorious” – father of Gideon and father of Glorious.Gabriel works long hours running a motorcycle bodaboda (taxi) business. Bodaboda taxi services started with bicycles, and while the bodaboda bicycle remains well represented, they are increasingly being replaced by motorbikes. His job gives him the flexibility to care for his children after school until Linfleviah returns home from work at the Export Processing zone.Baba Gideon is a wise steward of all the Lord has given him. He can support his family and pay for the children’s education through hard work and sensible financial management. Gabriel is part of the Mathare North bodaboda association, which allows the members to save collectively and benefits are shared in bulk.Gabriel is also a faithful steward of his children’s spiritual lives. He teaches his children how to pray and the family often spends evenings studying God’s word. He has followed and served Christ from an early age. Baba Glorious is the pastor of a church in Mathare and one of his favorite church activities is teaching Sunday School whenever his other church responsibilities allow him.In a community where most men are absent or irresponsible, Gabriel Chege is outstanding because of his commitment to his family. For his faithfulness to God and dedication to his family, we honor Gabriel this Father’s Day.
