A Visit to Naivasha by Ajema Kikuyu-NgumbaEvery time I visit the Mawewa High School in Naivasha, I am struck afresh by God’s incredible faithfulness and grace. During a recent visit, I found the students and staff settled in and thriving. The new environment is serene - distinctly different from the hustle and bustle of the Mathare campus. Some of the students were initially introverted, but they have all come out of their shells. The students have developed a bond in these few short weeks, and they work well together in discussion and care groups. They watch out for each other to ensure that no one feels left out or lonely. A recurring sentiment among the students was their joy at the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. Regardless of the adult’s role in the school, each one makes time for a student who needs to talk. The school day begins at 6 am, with lights out at 9 pm. Throughout the day, students are engaged in multiple activities geared towards their educational, spiritual, and physical transformation. One of the highlights of each student’s day is mealtime. Three healthy and delicious meals are served daily and tea during the morning break. One thing the students are not fond of is the cold showers each morning. However, they comply with the rules, and they are all turned out neatly each day.During a recent visit, I sat in on Mr. Makokha’s Chemistry class. It was a lively interactive session with the students. His teaching is fascinating, and I never imagined that Chemistry could be such fun; certainly more enjoyable than my classes decades ago! I observed two after-school activities. The first was a PE class. The teachers took students through several callisthenic drills in an impossibly small space, yet they managed to have a good workout. These teachers are quite creative in using the limited resources they have at their disposal to train the young people in different athletic disciplines. The second activity was a student-led evening devotion. Stanley Wambua, a Mawewa Primary School alumnus, did an excellent job leading the session. I had a moment of laughter when he asked one of the teachers to put away his smartphone. Talk about role reversal!I cannot wait to see how God continues to work in the lives of these young men and women. A high school education is a chance of a lifetime for them, and it is easy to see their appreciation for this opportunity. While wonderful to have this space to lease for our high school, I look forward to watching God’s hand in the development of our very own boarding school. I am so very grateful for His faithfulness to us throughout the years, and for the loyalty of our wonderful partners who have walked with us every step of the way!Asante Sana (Thank you) and Mungu awabariki (God bless)!Ajema Kikuyu-NgumbaProjects Director
