Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. Proverbs 6:6-8
Faith Wangui, 20, is a young woman with a zest for life and a willingness to help others. She was born in Mathare and attended school through her second year in high school - until her mother lost her job and life changed radically for Faith. She was sent upcountry to live with her aunt, where she planned to finish school, but her aunt kept her so busy doing chores in the evening and working on surrounding farms on the weekends, there was no time for studying. Her aunt also kept all of Faith’s wages to pay for her keep.Faith was discouraged and homesick, so one weekend, after receiving her wages, she secreted off to Nairobi to reconnect with her mother - but her mother was gone. Faith moved in with her grandmother and her brothers joined her there. Their grandmother moved the children into a single-room rental property she owned and Faith became the breadwinner for her younger siblings.Faith set up a secondhand clothing business, known as mtumba, in the streets of the Central Business District of Nairobi. After bills, she saved enough money to return to high school. Funds depleted early in her senior year and she could not afford the fees for final exam registration. Since keeping her brothers in school was a priority, Faith dropped out.Faith learned about eduKenya's Skill Training program and with the help of a sponsor, enrolled in the Beauty Program. Now, she attends the training program and pays a young man to run her mtumba while she is in class. Her plan is to complete her course, then work as a hair stylist to support her siblings until they are on their own. Faith hopes to one day complete her own education and perhaps attend college.eduKenya applauds Faith as she works hard to break the cycle of poverty and transform life for her family. We thank God for partners who help us offer opportunities for people to meet their needs and build hope-filled, productive futures. God bless!
