Mawewa School students participated in the Read Aloud Record Setting Day on June 15, 2015. Read Aloud is a campaign organized by Storymoja, an organization that believes “a reading nation is a smarter nation.”Storymoja wants Kenyan children to grow up reading for leisure and their goal is to put a book in the hand of every child. One way they seek to accomplish this is by increasing the access to books through starting or stocking libraries in all primary schools. Not an easy task considering more than 20,000 primary schools in Kenya do not have libraries.During Read Aloud, students at participating schools read the same book excerpt at the same time on the same day. In 2014, 160,000 children from 422 schools participated in the Read Aloud initiative. This year Read Aloud participants numbered 229,043 from 1,097 schools across 44 Kenyan counties, unofficially breaking the Guinness World Record for the most people reading aloud simultaneously! This year’s book, Attack of the Shidas (shida is Swahili for problems), is a story calling for peace through the message that unity is strength. Mawewa School’s Class Four had the honor and enjoyment of participating in the event. As a participating school, we hope to benefit from a grant to help stock the Mawewa School library with culturally relevant and age appropriate books for our students.
