The Community Support Ministry Baking 101 class was a success! The 4-day class, held April 27-30, had 12 adult participants - ten parents of Mawewa School students and two members of our school staff. The students learned to bake cupcakes, cakes and cinnamon rolls. In addition, they learned how to make local delicacies - flavored Chapati, mandazi, and samosa.
The baked goods were made using both traditional and Jiko ovens, a portable charcoal oven typically used by residents of Mathare slum. The women were thrilled to learn they can produce a quality product using whatever means available to them.
The four days were filled with fun and laughter. The students remarked that they were very happy to learn new skills and create new relationships. Here are a few of their comments:“I have always wondered how to make samosas. I am a regular consumer since they are my favorite, but today I learnt how to make them. Now I will be making them for my family and even for sale to others.” Mary“I have made great friends here.” Mama Edgar“Each recipe was a fresh and exciting experience. I cannot wait to get home and try out the recipes. I know my children will enjoy it.” RuthI have enjoyed this class. “When I took my cake home my kids thought it was store-bought. I enjoyed telling them that I made it. I really hope there will be more classes like this because it has enriched my life.” Pam “I feel empowered. Now I can walk into a bakery and ask for a job because I have experienced what it involves to be a baker.” Mama Sylvia
