We continue our blog series today in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and the 50th anniversary of his "I Have a Dream" speech by highlighting the dreams of two students in class six, currently the highest grade level at eduKenya's Kwa Watoto school. While 11-year-old Faith dreams of becoming a banker in her village and 12-year-old Naomi dreams of becoming Kenya's future leader, both girls share a dream that the Kwa Watoto school will extend to high school so they can continue their education next year. The eduKenya team shares this dream and has faith that God will guide and enable us to add grade levels each year so that Faith, Naomi and many other children can finish high school. Reverend King said, "Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve." We look forward to seeing how these remarkable young ladies use their education to serve their families, communities and country in the years to come.[caption id="attachment_265" align="alignleft" width="200"]
Faith, age 11[/caption]Faith: In the future I would like to be a banker. In our village there are no banks. I would like to be a banker so that even people in my village can learn that they can safely keep their money in a bank.My parents took me to Kwa Watoto School so that I can get a good education. Here in our village there is no other school better than Kwa Watoto. It is a good school. I will continue with my education here until I finish. My teachers tell me that if I work hard at school my dream will come true. That is why I wake up very early to go to school in the morning. I have learned from my teachers that the early bird catches the worm, so I make sure I get to school very early to study. I am good in mathematics and I know this will help me to become a good banker. My dream is for Kwa Watoto School to continue until high school so I can continue with my education and reach my dream of becoming a banker. My parents tell me that I must work hard so that my dream can become true. I agree with them. Since I am the oldest daughter in my family I would like to one day pay school fees for my younger siblings. Being a banker will help me to do that. I plan to take care of the things we need at home because charity begins at home.[caption id="attachment_271" align="alignleft" width="200"]
Naomi, age 12[/caption]Naomi: My dream is to become a president. The reason I want to be a president is because I want to help people who suffer a lot. In 2007 and 2008, many people died and even more were injured (due to the post-election violence in Kenya). I want to be able to build houses for the poor and hospitals. I also want to build good roads. Many people have lost their lives over the careless driving of others. There are many people who do not have jobs and so I wish to lead the country in such a way that there are more opportunities for jobs.A president gives security to people in the country. I will make sure that the people are not in danger. I will ensure that policemen follow instructions and the laws are employed to make sure the people do the same. A policeman is important in a country because he guards the citizens and helps them not be in danger. I will make sure there is security in every district and laws are followed. The citizens must follow laws and also pay taxes so that there is enough money to run the country.I thank God that Kwa Watoto School is helping me work towards achieving my dream. My parents and I have suffered a lot, which is why I have been working hard since coming to this school. Every day I am learning different things that I did not know before and getting a good education. My teachers are a very good example to us because they work hard and teach us new things that will help us fulfill our dreams. I love my school so much. I hope that it will continue to secondary school and even university so that I can learn there and achieve my dream of becoming a president.Check the blog tomorrow as we continue our "I Have a Dream" series by sharing the dreams of a Kwa Watoto student's mother.
