Today is Blog Action Day, a day when thousands of bloggers across hundreds of countries are writing about the topic of Human Rights. Education is a basic human right, as outlined in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:“Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory.”There are a staggering 57 million elementary-aged children out of school across the globe. There are many reasons for this:- Families can’t afford to purchase uniforms and books;- There are too few public primary schools available, or they are located too far away;- Many children don’t finish primary school because they are needed at home to take care of sick family members or work to meet the family’s basic needs;- Education isn’t prioritized when families are itinerant workers, struggling to meet basic needs or dealing with parent/caregiver illness;- Children lack immunizations and health care, and never begin school or leave school early as a result of chronic illness and even death. These reasons point to the importance of holistic development and show that simply establishing schools isn’t enough.Want to ensure that children living in poverty have the opportunity to be educated, a fundamental human right? Investment must be made not only in schools, but also in skills training and microenterprise programs for caregivers to ensure that families can afford to pay for uniforms and books, meet basic needs of children and prevent children from dropping out early to work. Holistic education programs also invest in the health care and nutrition of children to prevent children from dropping out of school as a result of chronic illness or malnutrition.eduKenya holistically works to ensure that children receive a quality education. Through a skills training program, home based care program for family members living with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses, and health care and feeding programs at school, we work hard to ensure that each child in our care is able to complete school and pursue their dreams. Get involved today and help children living in extreme poverty to have the basic human right of education.
