Freshmen Welcome Underclassmen [/caption]In mid-October, Mawewa Primary Classes 5 and 8 traveled to Mawewa High School in Naivasha for a weekend visit. One reason for the visit was to inform Class 8 students about our boarding school as they make decisions for high school in 2017. The younger students had an opportunity to talk to Form 1 (freshman) students about their first year of high school and to experience life at the boarding school.[caption id="attachment_3309" align="aligncenter" width="565"]
Primary students pose with high school teaching staff[/caption]The primary students also spent time with the Mawewa High School teachers and learned about the high school from a different perspective. Naivasha teachers have a reputation for being kind, understanding, encouraging, and godly. This was a great opportunity for Class 8 students to experience it for themselves.[caption id="attachment_3310" align="aligncenter" width="565"]
Always buy Railroads![/caption]The primary students brought along board games - Pictionary, Scrabble, and Monopoly - donated to the high school by eduKenya Director, Bob Kikuyu. The grade school kids had a great time learning how to play Monopoly with the freshmen.[caption id="attachment_3312" align="aligncenter" width="565"]
Hell's Gate National Park[/caption]The highlight of the children’s visit to the boarding school was a field trip with Form 1 to Hell’s Gate National Park. They marveled at the landscape rich in wildlife, the beautiful natural gorge, and the observation tower.
Why Boarding School?

Mawewa High School in Naivasha[/caption]We at eduKenya believe that boarding school is pivotal in the education of teens growing up in the slums. The atmosphere at the Mawewa boarding school in Naivasha facilitates learning and recreation. Integral to the program is the development of responsibility, discipline, independence, conflict resolution, communication, and social skills.[caption id="attachment_3313" align="aligncenter" width="565"]
Mathare neighborhood and housing[/caption]For our students from Mathare, boarding school provides a higher degree of physical and emotional safety. Our school in Naivasha is an oasis from the harmful distractions of the slum that interfere with academics, growth, and development.[caption id="attachment_3315" align="aligncenter" width="565"]
High School Staff[/caption]Mawewa School in Naivasha offers the additional advantage of being Christian-based where teachers and staff are role models who love God and live accordingly. They help students learn attitudes, skills, and subject matter that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible men and women.
