Building Her Daughter’s FutureIn April, Mawewa staff and students enjoyed a well deserved break between school terms. During that time, Mathare teemed with children playing in the streets and narrow alleys. However, at the construction site of the new Mawewa School building, there was no break as workers continued to shape the landscape with the addition of a second floor. The work there will continue until 4 floors are filled with spacious classrooms. As I visited the school construction site in mid-April, I was pleased to see one of our school parents in a reflective jacket and a helmet. Recently, Agnes Ndanu Matii, also known as Mama Eunice (mother of Eunice), approached me to discuss her daughter’s school fees. Although she had tried her best, there was nothing more she could do to raise funds. Mama Eunice is a strong African woman who is a single parent of four children and cares for her ailing mother. She has two children in high school, and her youngest, Eunice, is in Class 6 at Mawewa school. On Mama Eunice’s behalf, I spoke with the building contractor and asked that he consider employing some of the school parents as part of his crew. Mama Eunice took the initiative to follow through and is now employed as part of the manual labor force at the Mawewa site. The following week’s site visit again found Mama Eunice hard at work. She asked us to take a photo of her on the job and requested a copy of the photo to show Eunice. She wants Eunice to see that her mother played a part in building her school. She also wants Eunice to be reminded that her mother works hard to provide for her education, so that she may be inspired to work hard in school.Thank you and well done Mama Eunice! May God continue to bless the work of your hands. You are truly a partner with us in building Mawewa School as well as building a future for your daughter and others.Bob KikuyueduKenya Executive DirectorIn addition to building the new primary school in Mathare, we are moving ahead with plans to build a secondary boarding school near Masimba. If you haven’t had a chance to look over our development plan, we have included the link here. As Mother’s Day approaches in the U.S., please consider contributing to the future of our students on behalf of a significant woman in your life. Thank you and God bless!
