Mawewa School’s Class Three has 21 students - 7 girls and 14 boys. Their favorite subject is science. Class Three teacher, Mr. Nzoka, likes that his students engage daily with other faculty during clubs, games and guidance/counselling sessions. He believes it is important for them to get encouragement from multiple responsible adults.Mr. Nzoka, is one of the longest serving teachers at Mawewa School. He says, “My pupils come from unstable home situations whereby their parents work in the jua kali (informal) sector. This makes it hard for them to provide well for their children. Many pupils do not have basic needs such as enough food, and most wear only their school uniform since their parents cannot afford to buy other clothing.”Class Three Student Highlight
Eugene and his three older siblings live with their mother in Jagwani, the poorest part of the Mathare slum. His mother does odd jobs to provide for her children. Eugene is profoundly affected by slum life and often fails to complete his homework because of the many distractions at home. He says that a few neighborhood children try to corrupt his behavior.Eugene says he loves school because he is taught how to have positive relationships with others. He is grateful for the provision of two plentiful meals, a school uniform and learning materials. Eugene wants to do well in school because when he grows up, he wants to be a banker so he can move his mother out of Jangwani.
