On September 21st, 2024, Mawewa Junior Secondary School (JSS) learners participated in a debate competition held at Amref International University in Nairobi. The competition brought together learners from various schools, creating a platform for them to showcase their public speaking skills and engage in discussions on current issues.
Our students had been preparing for this event through smaller debates held within Mawewa School. They worked with their teachers to hone their public speaking skills by building confidence, working on pronunciation and effective articulation of their points.
Debate preparation just before the competition
In the first round, the motion was that Parents should have a say in what their children learn in school. Our Mawewa JSS team performed very well, securing 1st place against St. Mary's Ruaraka School. Our team's ability to deliver their ideas made them stand out among the competitors, earning them praise from both the judges and spectators.
The second motion was, Homeschooling is a better education system than classroom learning. Mawewa School went against Thika Road Christian school. At this stage they faced stiffer competition and by the final round, the Mawewa JSS team had achieved an admirable 8th place overall.
At the end of the competition, after the special awards for the top finishers, all the debate participants were awarded certificates in recognition of their hard work and the communication skills they demonstrated throughout the debate.
Our students were excited to receive their certificates and gain a new experience.
