December is a time when Mawewa students enjoy a break between school years. During the current break, Mawewa School teamed with Christian Best Camps of Kenya (CBCK) to provide outreach to our students in grades 4-9. The day camp was held at Mawewa Primary School December 5-9.

CBCK provides "an opportunity for urban youth to encounter Christ" in a unique way. CBCK states that “residents of the slum often live in 9 by 9-foot homes with unattached corrugated roofing. Many live on less than $1.50 a day. Meeting basic needs, including food and clean water, is a struggle . . . . and it is too easy for youths to fall into lives of violence and drug addiction.” Their outreach goals are discipleship and social, environmental and economic transformation.

"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."[/caption]

Led by CBCK Director Mr. Eric Simba, with the help of 5th-grade teacher Mr. Mule, the daily camp had an average of 120 attendees each day. The theme for the camp was drawn from John 1:14 and centered on the prophecy of and reason for Jesus birth.

Team Galatians

On the first day, the children divided into teams by age and grade. The Galatians - 4th and 5th graders, with teacher Miss Orinda as a team leader. The Ephesians - 6th and 7th grades, with Miss Macharia. The 8th and 9th grades made up the Philippians team, supported by Mr. Mureithi.

An outdoor activity[/caption]

Each day the children learned about God’s Word, played fun educational games, and worked on presentations. The team leaders made the indoor activities gospel-centered, and the result was that at least 20 children gave their lives to Christ on the last day.

A popular activity was the competition between teams to design the most creative and colorful nativity representation. Within each team, the children worked together beautifully to re-enact the manger scene. The Ephesians won with a vibrant nativity that closely depicted scripture accounts of the birth of our Lord Jesus.

On the last day of camp, children welcomed their parents to the school and showcased all they had learned. The parents, excited to share in their children’s joy, were moved by the depth of spiritual truth imparted to the camp participants. As a Christmas gift, CBCK sent a food pack home with each family - a lovely end to a wonderful week. We thank God for providing partnerships between eduKenya and excellent organizations like CBCK.
