eduKenya: A Movement with a Purpose
eduKenya: A Movement with a Purpose

When we are in pursuit of something, it is often necessary to have a goal or an end in mind. Without a goal or an ending, we can wander aimlessly off track. We at eduKenya are not exempt from this mentality. While we are a registered organization, we think of ourselves as more of a movement than an organization. We have no desire to grow our organization, but simply to grow the impact of the organization. We exist to empower the communities we work with through investment and training to operate schools and skill training programs sustainably. Therefore, we see ourselves as a fluid movement, not looking to "establish" ourselves - but simply focusing on one child at a time, one class at a time, and one community at a time. The journey we are taking does in fact have a goal. We desire to have the children that go through the programs come out with three qualities:

  1. Character - Someone who is experiencing the transformed life towards Christ-likeness.
  2. Ability to be gainfully employed - Someone who is educated, but also has the ability to think independently and critically to be able to be gainfully employed.
  3. Compassion - Someone that has a mentality to go back and make a difference in their community.

If this is the type of person we desire to come out of the program, then we have to take steps to get there. The following are our plans to get to this place of transformation.

  1. Partner with the local church in small communities within Mathare and develop a primary school, skill training programs and home based care programs.
  2. Invest for Self Sustainability of each local school and project through local management training, a school building and rental property investments for income generation.
  3. Invest in property outside of Nairobi to set up a boarding school for upper primary and high school levels which each small school set up in Mathare will feed into.
  4. Investment for the sustainability of the boarding school, as well as eventually blending the school with tuition paying students.
  5. Set up scholarship programs through partnerships with local and international universities, trade schools and foundations to allow further education for each student after they finish high school.
  6. Restart the process in another Mathare community. See step 1.

This is our desire. We believe God has not simply brought us to Mathare to get as many children into school as possible, but taking it a step further, we are striving for high quality education and transformation in the community. This can happen, through God's grace, by providing mentorship and basic opportunities. Education solely, is not the answer. Sustainability and investment in each child and family is our goal. We believe our responsibility is to help provide an opportunity, not to do everything for those we work with. We believe that is our purpose, and with that purpose in mind we can work hard to strive after this goal that has been laid out before us. The beauty of it is that we may not see the end, and that we are just simply a tiny seed that God is planting. We have our role to play, and believe that God will take that seed and create a movement. People will no longer see Mathare as a slum, but as a place that has great schools, that has entrepreneurs and children who grow up and bring about transformation in Nairobi, in Kenya, in Africa and in the world. That is our dream at eduKenya, and each day that is what we are working towards as God leads us.
