With her hands open in surrender, Faith let her voice soar. “Hakuna Mungu kama wewe, hakuna, Mungu kama wewe…” (there is no God like you). As the harmonies blended together, the warm sound grew louder and louder as more voices joined in. The simple words of praise filled her heart and filled the school hall, as Faith and the rest of the school worship team led their fellow students and teachers of eduKenya’s Chelezo High School in a time of worship during the weekly chapel service. Faith has been a part of the school worship team since primary school. Like many other Kenyan children, worship music has always played a pivotal role in her Christian walk. Through the deep spiritual truths and biblical references in the words of the music, leading worship has not only provided a creative outlet for Faith, but also helped her spiritual growth.
Beyond the Christian Religious Education (C.R.E) classes, bible memory verse exercises, prayer times and weekly chapel services at the school, our students are also a part of Care Groups. These smaller more intimate groups of peers, provide a safe space to openly share challenges and difficult questions. Led by our teachers, these groups are a mix of discipleship, spiritual nurture and counseling. Faith has thrived in her group, openly sharing her fears, concerns and worries about her future, while also actively providing encouragement and support to her friends. Her Care Group leader, Mr. Obwora, has stood with her, encouraged her, and reminded her to depend on Jesus. Faith has valued this encouragement, especially recently when her family was not only homeless for a time, but also while dealing with her mother's battle with leukemia. Mr. Obwora says of her, “Faith is a very joyful, hardworking and talented girl. Her commitment to love and care for her colleagues within our care group is very obvious. She has such a positive attitude, it makes her resilient. She has faced many hurdles and hardships, her family has been through a lot, but she’s staying strong.”
