Lake Nakuru National Park sits on the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Hemmed in by woods and grasslands, the beautiful park provides a “wide ecological diversity and varied habitats that range from Lake Nakuru itself to the surrounding escarpment and picturesque ridges (Kenya Wildlife Service).”The students at eduKenya’s Boarding School recently embarked upon an excursion to the picturesque parkland to study its wildlife and flora, fulfilling the fieldwork part of their Geography studies. Teacher Mr. Owiti said, “The day was breathtakingly beautiful, the sky was dark blue and not even a single cloud was in sight.”
Baboons, plentiful throughout the park, were the first animal species the students encountered upon their arrival.
Venturing deep into the preserve, the children experienced the joy of God’s magnificent creation. Exquisite scenery, zebras, giraffes, buffalo, antelopes, and warthogs kept heads turning.
The ultimate destination of their adventure was the beautiful 17 square mile Lake Nakuru. The children learned how the lake and surrounding areas were formed.
Lake Nakuru is the world’s most important foraging site for the lesser flamingo. Form 2 student, Daisy A., was delighted to see the beautiful birds in their natural habitat.
At the end of the day, students boarded the bus and headed to Nakuru Town for dinner and a bottle of soda at a restaurant – rare treats for the children. Revived by their meal, the boys and girls joked and teased during the trip home.
Boarding school student, Solomon K, wrote about his experience. “The trip was enjoyable. It was one of those events that can’t be forgotten. It enabled me to learn important facts about Lake Nakuru. One of the facts is that the trees around Lake Nakuru dry up during the rainy season because the lake floods and the roots of the trees lack aeration.”
Trina A. commented that “the visit to Lake Nakuru was met with enthusiasm by the students. The arrival at Lake Nakuru was a joyful moment as we were welcomed by the monkeys at the main gate, which was exciting for photographers like David K.”Thanks to the faithful support of our donors, the boarding school students receive the opportunity to leave the confines of the classroom and learn about God’s glorious creation first hand. We are grateful that you believe in our work and our hope for the children we serve.
