Njenga and Adam Gould[/caption]Good and Faithful ServantJoseph Njenga, known as “Njenga” (pronounced Jenga – like the game), is a well-beloved member of the eduKenya team. Besides his job at eduKenya, he is a musician, songwriting and performing under the stage name “V.O.H.” (Vessel of Honor). Njenga recently graduated from college with a diploma in Project Management.Njenga has faithfully served eduKenya for eight years. He began as a volunteer in 2008 and joined the staff as an employee in 2011 as Coordinator of eduKenya’s Home Based Care program, which eventually became the Community Support Ministry (CSM). In this role, he acts as the liaison between eduKenya, Mawewa School and the community. We asked Njenga to share with us about his role at eduKenya.CSM CoordinatorAs the CSM Coordinator, I evaluate a prospective student’s qualifications; check up on the welfare of students at school and home; resolve issues that jeopardize a child's education; recommend intervention in times of domestic crisis; and investigate claims of child abuse or neglect, intervening with authorized protective action when necessary.I help facilitate the ROPES program at Mawewa School, which gives me an opportunity to guide the older students as they maneuver adolescence and to encourage their parents’ involvement in all aspects of their lives.I refer parents and other community members to resource centers that aid with business loans, medical care, and job placement. Occasionally, I organize adult training workshops such as soap making, beadwork, business skills, and parenting classes. The community he serves:The Mathare community has a very high regard for Mawewa School’s unique and holistic approach to education. The esteem for our academics grew after the outstanding 2015 KCPE exam results. Skills Training has helped many families move out of abject poverty. Now they can afford food, clothing, and health care. eduKenya has established a good reputation with community opinion leaders, government agencies, and families living in the slum. A major benefit of these relationships is that our organization operates safely and securely within a community fraught with crime. How his recent education will affect his work:My recent studies in Project Management will aid my ability to plan, organize, lead, and direct the course of specific projects in which I am now involved. Also, I will take on extra responsibilities to which I can apply my new knowledge. What Njenga has learned and how eduKenya has influenced him:As eduKenya has grown, so has the scope of my work and my personal responsibilities. The many new challenges that have come my way boosted my knowledge base and contributed to my personal development. My experiences with staff and the people we serve increased my faith in God. I have learned not to put limits on God, but allow Him to guide my steps and actions.eduKenya is glad to call Joseph Njenga one of its own. We look forward to watching him grow in his role within our organization, and in his faithful service to those in the Mathare community.
