“And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you.” Psalm 39:7

Faith Wambui Wanjohi is the mother of two Mawewa School students. Late last year, Faith experienced overwhelming fatigue and right leg pain, which she attributed to being overworked. As the discomfort worsened, Faith visited several hospitals and received pain relievers, but no diagnosis. The pain persisted and worsened.Earlier this month Faith received a referral to Kenyatta National Hospital for evaluation. After costly, extensive testing, Faith was diagnosed with advanced skin cancer. Faith and her family are grieving over the diagnosis and are in turmoil because their savings are now depleted. On Friday, October 9, the Mawewa School community raised funds for Faith to begin treatment. Community Support Ministry Coordinator, Joseph Njenga, went to Kenyatta Hospital to pay for the first round of treatment. Sadly, 2,000 people are ahead of Faith on the waiting list and it will be many weeks before it is her turn to begin therapy. The eduKenya staff is researching other opportunities for an earlier treatment regimen. Please pray for a different treatment venue to be found and that Faith may begin therapy soon. Pray that she will be restored to full health. Pray also for her family during this difficult time and give thanks for fellow Mawewa School parent, Winnie Wanja, who has graciously taken responsibility for the care of Faith’s children.

October is Cancer Awareness Month in Kenya

  • Cancer is the 3rd highest cause of morbidity in Kenya, after infectious and cardiovascular diseases.
  • 70-80% of cancer cases are diagnosed in late stages due to: Lack of awareness; inadequate diagnostic facilities; lack of treatment facilities; high cost of treatment; and a high poverty index.
  • There are only 4 cancer treatment centers in Kenya; three are private facilities and beyond the reach of those living in poverty.
  • Only 24 medical personnel (including oncologists, nurses, and therapy technologists) are dedicated to cancer diagnosis and treatment in Kenya.
  • Statistics adapted from Kenya Cancer Network.
