A Mathare mother holding her child[/caption]Today is International Women’s Day, a day set apart to celebrate women, raise awareness of the unjust circumstances and lack of human rights experienced by countless women around the world, and recommit ourselves to working for freedom, empowerment, and equality for all women.eduKenya works with many women in the Mathare slum of Kenya, employing a holistic approach for their empowerment. First, we provide training in income-generating skills such as sewing and cosmetology. By learning marketable skills, women like Susan earn a steady income to provide for their families. Their lives, and those of their children, are dramatically transformed by the opportunity to learn new skills.eduKenya also cares for women living with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses by providing physical, emotional and spiritual support through the Home Based Care program. The combination of lifesaving antiretroviral drugs, support from staff and other women in similar circumstances, and the opportunity to learn income-generating skills routinely moves women from being homebound to productively working again. Their children’s lives are substantially impacted by this transformation, as they have greater access to food and can resume going to school because they can pay for school fees and books. Finally, we come alongside women in Mathare by educating and feeding their children. Many children at eduKenya’s Kwa Watoto school are in female-headed households. Their mothers struggle to meet the needs of multiple children and work various informal jobs earning less than $2 per day. Providing enough food for their children, let alone meals that are nutritious, is a significant challenge. For this reason, eduKenya provides two nutritious meals per day for each student. Children are fed and able to learn, and a weighty burden is lifted from their mothers. We stand for and with Mathare women and their children. Though today is designated for focusing on women, we are committed to their wellbeing, equality, and empowerment every day. Our vision for them is wholeness, health, opportunity, freedom, and the hope that comes from knowing and receiving the love of their Maker. In other words, fullness of life.
