Is It Christmas Today?
In areas of extreme poverty, food is a constant thought, especially for children. A few years ago, in one of Nairobi’s slums, I was part of work team that had a celebration that included a nice meal. At the feast, one brave child approached me and asked, “Is it Christmas today?” For these children, a change in menu only happens on Christmas day; hence, the question from the child “Is it Christmas today?”Christmas celebrates the birth of our Messiah, who brought us hope and new possibilities. Isaiah 9:1-6 announces the coming of the Messiah and speaks about a reversal in fortunes for the marginalized and underprivileged:“Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress….The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned….You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest….you have shattered the yoke that burdens them….For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,”The birth of the Savior heralds a new and everlasting beginning as "He who sits on the throne said, 'Behold, I am making all things new....these words are faithful and true.'" Revelation 21:5. The Gospel of Christ lifts those who are fallen, strengthens the weak, provides for the poor, delivers justice to the oppressed, and salvation for the lost. Those who trust in Christ receive His abundant blessing. Those who follow Jesus' example are called to be that abundant blessing. The children in the Mathare slum daily live in a world of deprivation. However, I can say with confidence, I do not hear our KWS students ask: “Is it Christmas today?” Through the work of eduKenya, our children enjoy the Gospel lived out in their midst. At Kwa Watoto School, they experience the power and presence of Christ daily through holistic education, two meals per day, and a loving and caring environment. My hope is for a future in which no child in Mathare will ask, “Is it Christmas?” when he or she receives a nutritious meal. My prayer is that all children in Mathare will one day experience the holistic transformation enjoyed by the students at KWS. On behalf of the eduKenya and KWS family, I thank you for being part of the blessing through Christ to the children of Mathare.Have a Joyous Christmas!Bob KikuyuKenya Director - eduKenya
