Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
Galatians 6:9-10
Children living in extreme poverty in Mathare often have their childhood innocence snatched away from them at an early age. They have to grow up very fast. They learn to navigate dangerous neighborhoods on their own, are exposed to explicit adult activity, alcoholism and drugs while living in close quarters with no privacy.
They do not have access to open play spaces without trash and sewage strewn in their path. Even for those with loving supportive parents or relatives who look out for them as much as they can, overexposure to certain dangers or social decay cannot be avoided. This is the reality of everyday life in Mathare. It is the only life that the children in our schools know.
Our Mawewa Primary School is an oasis in Mathare. Our school compound and classes offer children living in extreme poverty the opportunity to be kids. They can play freely with abandon in safety. They can learn and ask questions from adults who care about their success. They can discover music, poetry and theater. They have access to open green spaces, participating in organized sports.
Our Chelezo High School offers the older children in our care even more opportunities to continue their education in a safe environment away from the distractions and challenges of Mathare, giving our teens the chance to really focus on their education and character growth.
Because of generous givers like you, the children of Mathare can be kids who not only survive a tough childhood, but thrive. Would you consider giving a special gift this summer to enable us to continue being an oasis Mathare?
