Form 1 student, Mercy, and Administrative Director, Erick Nzomo[/caption]Interim Student InternshipIn January, eduKenya initiated a pilot internship program for Form 1 students (Form 1 = freshman high school class). The program, developed in response to the long 10-week interim between the end of 8th grade and the beginning of 9th grade, provided structure and occupation for the teenagers during part of their break.Form 1 students interned in multiple departments. In the eduKenya offices, they learned how to file, scan documents, and many other useful tasks. In the Kindergarten Department, they assisted the little ones with homework. The most popular assignment was in the Skill Training Department. In the Tailoring Program, they learned to mark, pin and stitch fabric and sew buttonholes, and in the Cosmetology Program – braiding and manicures. At the new Mawewa School, interns helped level out the playground, ran errands for the head-teacher, assisted the custodian with carpentry and helped proctor midterm examinations. Since the program is flexible and fluid, the students had an opportunity to work in various departments, trying their hands at different skills.Several weeks into the program, the benefits were apparent – the students were occupied for several hours each day; the assignments provided opportunities to learn skills and experience life in the workforce; and a work ethic, learned in the classroom, was reinforced on the job. In addition, the eduKenya and Mawewa School staff thoroughly enjoy the youngster’s presence, enthusiasm, and help! The student and staff’s enthusiasm about the experience led to discussions about providing a similar program during the second and third term break. We thank God for this useful and successful pilot internship program!
