The Kwa Watoto School Baby Class has twenty-five students, ages 3-4 years. The focus for the Baby Class is concentrated on introducing them to school life and education basics. These little ones are particularly fond of coloring, modeling clay, recess and meal times.
In addition to education, the children receive two nutritious meals each day, enrichment activities, and Christian nurture. Each child received a medical exam on February 3.Mrs. Mwangi teaches the Baby Class and has taught at Kwa Watoto School for six years. She says, “I love teaching because to me it is a calling from the Lord. I love to interact with young children.” Mrs. Mwangi has a passion for teaching the children about personal hygiene, which many have never learned.Meet Isaac (Class picture: Middle row, far left)Isaac is 4 years old. He lives with his family in Jangwani, an extremely overcrowded and poverty-stricken section of Mathare slum.One of Isaac’s favorite classroom subjects is learning numbers. When he grows up, Isaac wants to be a teacher so that he can teach children how to sing songs. Isaac says, “I like being in school because of the (food). They give us watermelon and other fruits.” Our students are able to learn more easily with food in their stomachs!Isaac faces challenges in his speech development. He has delayed speech and he does not speak English fluently.
