Roseland using new electric sewing machine[/caption]Last year the eduKenya Tailoring Department received an order for 217 new student uniforms from Kwa Watoto School. Students visited the tailoring room for measurements from October 2013 – April 2014. Although the tailoring staff worked diligently to keep up with the order, the challenge to meet the May 2014 deadline appeared insurmountable.Tailoring students and tutors, using four manual sewing machines, labored to finish uniforms by the deadline. However, progress was slow because only one machine is reliable, the other three prone to malfunction. After discussion between eduKenya administration and tailoring staff, an electric sewing machine was purchased for the department.[caption id="attachment_1858" align="alignleft" width="378"]
Girls' netball team in new uniforms[/caption]Roseland, the tutor in charge of production, says, “Since we bought this new electric sewing machine, work has been running smoothly. This machine has enabled us to improve the quality of the work and finish the uniforms for the entire school population. In addition, the school has saved money because we made the uniforms for the girls’ netball team. My outside customers are pleased because I have been able to complete their orders with no more delays.”In addition to using the new machine for production, the Skill’s Training Department will train tailoring students to sew on the electric and manual machines. The ability to use both types of equipment will greatly increase their chance of employment in Nairobi!
