Meet Ann – Grade 8 Student
Ann, 13, is the seventh born of eight siblings and lives with her family in Mathare. Ann’s parents struggle to provide food and shelter for their children, requiring both to work extended amounts of time away from home. Her father is sometimes gone for weeks and her mother can only be with the family on Sundays.Due to parental absence, the parenting role has fallen to older siblings. Her oldest brother, 25, takes care of the family when the parents are away. Ann’s oldest sister, 23, is Ann’s role model, and in her fourth year of college. Ann talks about her with such poignancy. She is the one who teaches Ann how to be a young lady, how to do house chores, and to work hard. Whenever she is home from college, she tutors Ann in Mathematics.Ann is a well-adjusted girl who is happy and has a radiant smile. In her free time she likes to draw, saying it relaxes her. Ann is looking forward to the Standard 8 exams (KCPE) at the end of the year, though with some anxiety. She wants to score well so she can advance to high school. Ann likes the prospect of attending boarding school because she will have more time to study! Ann would like to be a college professor when she is grown.
Pray for Ann:
