Ms. Moureen Njeru[/caption]
My Favorite Teacher
eduKenya is committed to hiring faculty who believe in our vision of transformation and who are motivated by Jesus to love and serve the poor, oppressed. and vulnerable. Ms. Moureen Njeru is one of those teachers. She is the primary 8th-grade instructor, teaches Mathematics to other grades, facilitates the debate club, coaches school sports, and in 2016, headed the KCPE examinations. Moureen is a capable, determined, and compassionate teacher, but humbly downplays her capabilities. Perhaps Petro, 5th-grade, describes Ms. Njeru the best. Enjoy his story written last fall in Class 4:
“My favorite teacher is called Miss Njeru. She is so beautiful. She likes hardworking pupils. She is a good teacher and dislikes it when we are lazy. All the teachers in our school like her. She is not proud and she always tells us what she learnt in church every Monday. She walks like a peacock.
Miss Njeru is my Mathematics teacher. She is the best. She teaches patiently until I understand. She also encourages me to do other teachers’ work. She does not like to punish students but will find ways to get you to listen and obey. She loves little children. We always want to be good so that she can be happy. She does not like it when we fight with each other in class.
Miss Njeru likes chapati. She also likes sharing her food with her pupils. She tells us that we must help one another. She makes us feel like we are all her children. Every other week she rewards us when we do well in Mathematics by bringing us sweets. She tells us stories that help us become better children. When we tell her she looks beautiful, she becomes very happy. She likes to wear a black jacket.
My teacher likes to play volleyball and netball. She is as fast as a deer. She teaches the older girls how to play volleyball and netball. She asks the girls to play carefully so that they do not get hurt. She coaches them on how to hold and throw a ball. She also tells them that practice takes time and that they should play without complaining.
Miss Njeru loves animals. She has taught us that poaching is bad and that we should protect all wild animals. I love my teacher very much.”
Many children in Mathare do not have acceptable adult role models in their lives. Mawewa School is blessed to have teachers like Moureen Njeru who set a godly example for our students, which contributes to their holistic transformation.
“Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity and sound speech that cannot be condemned…” Titus 2:7-8
