Ronald Rogo is an attorney based in Nairobi, Kenya. Today he shares about his educational background in Kenya and why he is an eduKenya Parter for Hope.I attended a school where more than half of the students came from very poor backgrounds and could not afford the tuition fees. Through the generosity of sponsors from different parts of the world, my alma mater has grown into one of the best learning institutions in Kenya. The school is one of the top performers in the country, renowned for its holistic education and disciplined students. To date, the vast majority of students are poor, some even orphaned.I have therefore been able to experience firsthand the transformative power of education. I have seen orphaned children walk in to the school’s gates without shoes and walk out years later to join Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Oxford and other top universities in the world. I have seen students who have through sheer hard work and determination pulled their families out of the slums of Nairobi. I have seen the destinies of families - even entire clans - being changed because their children excelled academically. In short, I have seen firsthand the transformative power of education. When people say that education is the key to life this is not just a cliché. I can nod my head and point at hundreds of lives where this is true. Thus when eduKenya Co-Founder and US Executive Director, Adam Gould told me about eduKenya it was that much easier to jump on board. I could relate to the difficulties of the children in Jangwani neighborhood of the Mathare slum in Nairobi. I saw the passion and the love Adam had for the children and knew eduKenya would offer them another chance at life. Poor children who otherwise would not have a fair shot at life’s opportunities.eduKenya is continuing on the path of transforming lives through education. Although we have a long way to go, we have also come a long way. With your help we can walk the rest of the way, one step at a time, as we transform the community, one child at a time. I hope that one day there will be a critical mass of alumni from eduKenya who will, in turn, start their own eduKenyas throughout the world. We will get there.
