Beth and Mark Killian live in Spokane, Washington, where Mark teaches Sociology at Whitworth University. Beth is a former high school English teacher and now is in a graduate program studying Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Mark and Beth have three children, and are passionate about adoption, good people, and good music. eduKenya believes that "all people are made in the image of God and created to experience fullness of life in Him." This belief drives intentional and effective efforts to promote justice and empowerment through the paramount vehicle of education. The mission and values of eduKenya, while humble and simple, are in line with principles we believe to be deep in the heart of Jesus: redemption, reconciliation, and resurrection. In addition, the organization's commitment to stewardship and sustainability make the mission more than just fancy rhetoric; as children receive the opportunity to go to school, and as their families receive training in practical skills, and as these educational efforts become more financially self-sustaining because of intentional investment, real transformation is occurring on spiritual and economic levels. We love that we get to be a small part of it.We began supporting eduKenya after hearing about it from dear friends, Jeff and Elizabeth Thompson. As a "thank you" for our first donation, we were sent a coffee table book of photographs taken by Tony and Amy Hoffer of the children and families in Mathare served by the ministry. Our kids (ages 3 and 4) found the book one day and were completely taken by the photographs. The questions flowed as they took it all in. What are they eating? Why isn't he wearing shoes? Is she sad? We entered for the first time into dialog with our children about poverty and God's heart for all people. The gears began turning in their little brains, and we were reminded that the lives we live and the investments we choose to make are not unto ourselves or for our own sakes; rather, we want to live lives that somehow reverberate, even in small ways, when we are gone. We want to nurture the fledgling fascinations forming in our kids through those photos of the Mathare people by committing to give to and pray for the ministry there.
