Remembering Alicia
Remembering Alicia
Alycia

We are deeply saddened to share that one of our students tragically passed away last week. Alicia Njeri was a five year old girl who was in the Nursery Class at the Kwa Watoto School. Alicia was a beautiful girl with a joyful spirit. Her favorite subject in school was 'Environment'. Alicia became sick earlier in the week and died on the way to the hospital. Alicia's family and the eduKenya/Kwa Watoto School community are deeply grieving. As we mourn, we ask that you join with us in prayer for Alicia's family and her school family.Alicia's tragic death exposes the cruel reality of poverty. Her access to medical care was a local clinic, which was unable to provide sufficient care and referred her to the hospital too late. Lack of access to hospitals and resources to pay for private medical care limit opportunities for those living in Mathare. We do not know if the outcome would have changed with better medical care, but believe Alicia's death may have been preventable. This reality of poverty, faced by Alicia and every other child we serve, fuels our work in providing opportunities, for we dream of a day when poverty will no longer claim the lives of young children. It is always difficult losing someone, but particularly so when a child is so young. We recognize that God is in control and that Alicia is being cared for by her Heavenly Father. That doesn't take the sting of loss away, but does reassure us that God is cradling Alicia in his arms. Alicia's name means "noble" and "exalted." It helps us to think about Alicia as exalted in the arms of God, free from sorrow, mourning and pain forevermore. Please leave a comment to express your thoughts and prayers for Alicia's family and the eduKenya/Kwa Watoto community.
