Sharing the Burden
Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2
Preparing for school exams is stressful for children and teachers, and particularly true for students with learning disabilities. Tabitha, a recent Class 1 student at Mawewa School, has difficulty grasping concepts. What a blessing for her that Class 1 teacher, Mrs. Lydia Wandera, is dedicated to helping students who struggle in their studies. One way Mrs. Wandera supports them is by forming student discussion groups, where children work together and help each other. As the year progressed, Tabitha, who rarely spoke up in class, surprised everyone by becoming a discussion leader and the representative to ask questions on behalf of the class. She promised her peers to work hard and pass the exam. Throughout the year, her academic performance improved as her teacher and classmates encouraged her.All students in a group of 57 private schools in and around Mathare are tested according to their grade level, and the scores are compared. Mawewa School’s Class 1 placed fourth among all first-grade classes in the Kasarani Cluster. Mrs. Wandera and Class 1 students were overjoyed that Tabitha passed her exams.Tabitha, seeing that although she passed, her score was low, wept openly before students and teacher. She was grieved that her performance had brought down the class’s overall performance. Her fellow students and Mrs. Wandera wept along with her as they told her how proud they were of her and their fourth place within the cluster. Comforted by the love and encouragement of her teacher and peers, Tabitha promised to continue to work hard and ask questions in Grade 2. Her classmates promised her their continued support next year. This camaraderie, dedication, and godly conduct of students and teachers are typical in Mawewa School classes, from preschool to high school. It is what makes Mawewa School stand out among other schools in and around Mathare. Through December 31, we have a dollar-for-dollar match for all donations.
