Hairdressing and Beauty Department The Hairdressing and Beauty Department is proud to announce they are at full capacity. Seven adult women students are well on their way to completing all the requirements of the program. They are increasingly confident in their abilities as they learn multiple hairstyling techniques, the use of various types of salon equipment, and the application of different cosmetics. The students have also been studying professional ethics in the beauty and hairdressing industry and the Cosmetology Code of Conduct. Consequently, they report a positive modification in their interactions with teachers, customers, and other interpersonal relationships. One of the students was forced to close her personal salon last year because she did not possess the skills needed to meet client requests. We are pleased to report that she has been able to reopen her salon and provide services that meet the demand of her customers! The Hair and Beauty Department hopes to open another salon this year to cater to the growing demand and to market services to a wider audience within the Mathare community.Tailoring DepartmentAt the beginning of 2014, the Tailoring Department admitted five new adult students to the ongoing Tailoring Class. Our Tailoring students completed school uniforms prior to the beginning of the term for the new baby class and for the seventh grade class, now boarding at the Millennium School. They are completing uniforms for the remaining classes, with a target end-date of the beginning of second term. The progress of our longer-term students is remarkable. In addition to being able to sew well-made clothing, they are capable of garment design. We look forward to all the students becoming equally competent, using their new skill to transform their personal lives and those of their families and community.
