eduKenya Staff Get Their Hands Dirty

Now the One who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for all generosity, which produces thanksgiving to God through us. 2 Corinthians 9:10-11

5 Where to begin...

Ready to work after a long journey[/caption]Each quarter during the school year, the eduKenya and Mawewa School staff take time away together to build relationships and have fun. On April 3, the event took place at the site of our future boarding school. Our mission - plant hundreds of trees around the property perimeter. We boarded a bus early on Good Friday and arrived in Masimba at 11.00 a.m. After a light snack we prayed for the land, the children who will live there, and the surrounding community. We divided into school teams and spread out along the property perimeter to plant the seedlings. Of course, a competition ensued to see who would finish first, which led to much fun and lots of laughter.[caption id="attachment_2361" align="alignright" width="260"]

Pastor Bob digs the project

Pastor Bob digs the project[/caption]A wonderful part of the day involved meeting neighbors who, curious about us and our activity, stopped by for a visit. They offered advice to the "city dwellers" on how to plant, and a local shepherd offered to look out for our trees. After all the trees were in the ground, we headed to the nearby town of Emali for lunch. We held our monthly award ceremony and gave the teacher-of-the-term award to Mrs. Esther Mwangi, Pre-Primary 1 instructor. These award times are a great staff motivator, but this day’s greatest motivator was the goat stew served at lunch![caption id="attachment_2363" align="alignleft" width="211"]

Goat Stew

Goat Stew[/caption]We arrived back in Nairobi 4-hours off schedule, but no one cared because we had a wonderful time. On the way home, we talked of returning to check on the planting. Each team is convinced that their one-hundred trees will survive. God willing, they will all survive and flourish, as will our future boarding school. This week we mailed the eduKenya Development Plan to our financial partners. This plan provides an overview of what is needed to achieve our vision of building two self-sustaining schools: Mawewa primary school in Mathare and the boarding school near Masimba. We invite you to prayerfully consider the next step in partnering with us as we pursue God’s vision for the children of Mathare.Pauline Ng’ang’aeduKenya Communications Assistant
