Learning Support educator, Joy Njuguna[/caption]Learning Support TrainingSkills Training student, Mary, struggled to understand calculations and concepts in the Tailoring Course. At the end of the six-month course, she bid farewell to classmates as they graduated and she labored on to fulfill class requirements. Under the intensive guidance of faculty, Mary stayed three months longer to complete the program.Mary was not the first student to present with learning difficulties, but her needs taxed the expertise of the educators. Mawewa School teachers also labored to meet the needs of young students with learning disabilities. Thus, we started to dialogue about improving assistance to students who struggle with classwork and other areas of school life.Learning Support instructor, Joy Njuguna, came highly recommended. She has an extensive background in special education and experience working in a Kibera Slum school. In September, three Mawewa School teachers met Joy and toured the Little Rock School in Kibera. They returned with a favorable report regarding their experience, and we hired Joy to teach an in-service.On October 31, Joy provided an intensive training program on Learning Support to Skills Training, Preschool, and Secondary faculty. Besides instructional strategies, she spoke about holistic child development and balancing classroom time between curriculum and intellectual/emotional support. The teachers appreciated that Joy had former experience as an educator and they had a good response to the training. Our schools and faculty will continue to develop the area of Learning Support to help students succeed at school and in life.
