Today we hear from Miss Phoebe Hadia, a tutor in eduKenya’s skills training program who also teaches Kwa Watoto students how to use One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) computers. We are very grateful for all that Miss Hadia does for children and women in Mathare!
The seven OLPCs graciously donated to the Kwa Watoto School were among the greatest gifts of 2013 for our teachers and students. I was thrilled to be asked to teach the students how to use the computers to impart the knowledge I gained from completing a computer instructional program. On my first day of class I was just as excited as the children were, but also quite nervous. I had a lot of ‘what ifs’ in my mind. I was scared of not knowing how to handle the class and doubted my teaching ability. I was afraid of confusing them with information they wouldn’t understand or of giving them too little instruction. However, as soon as the class began, my fears were relieved and everything fell into place.I have been amazed at how eager the children are to learn and how quickly they become proficient in using the computer applications. I live for the moment when I introduce a new lesson and all the children are able to do it without difficulty. Seeing their eyes shine with excitement when they are learning something new is a most memorable and cherished moment. It has been such a great experience and, like the children, I always look forward to the next lesson. Thursday has become my favorite day of the week because I get to teach the children that day! My horizons have been expanded because of this incredible teaching opportunity given to me.It is my hope and prayer that we get more OLPC laptops so that each child can have one during their lessons in order to enhance their learning experience and boost their confidence.
