Most parents of our Kwa Watoto and Millennium School students have minimal academic training and struggle to eke out an existence for their families. Chances to rise out of abject poverty are slim-to-none without a specific skill. To support our students holistically, eduKenya offers parents an opportunity to better meet the needs of their families and contribute to the Mathare community. The Community Support Ministry has recently introduced Soap Making instruction for the Mathare community. Several people trained in this skill in the February and March sessions.Participants learned how to make detergent with bleach, toilet bowl cleaner, floor disinfectant, antiseptic liquid, antibacterial hand wash, liquid soap, and hair shampoo. In April, baking lessons will be added to our existing programs. Most participants in these two programs will use their new skills to help supplement the income they earn in their day jobs. The results of learning new skills include increased earning potential, improved confidence and a sense of control over their lives. Having mastered new income generating skills, trainees are better able to meet the needs of their families, leading to better education, healthcare and overall development outcomes for their children.
