Vision Trip 2014 Alumni – Peggy and Wayne Gordon
Sandwiched between executive directors, Adam Gould and Bob Kikuyu, Peggy and Wayne Gordon tried to hide their anxiety as they walked the packed-dirt pathways of Mathare slum on their way to Mawewa School (formerly Kwa Watoto). They saw all eyes on them and felt conspicuous. Their joy at seeing the children was temporarily overshadowed by their interpretation of the looks they received as they passed by the residents of the community. They imagined those eyes asking, “What are YOU doing here? YOU don’t belong! What are you LOOKING at?” It was with great relief they approached the gates of the school. As soon as they passed through the gates of Mawewa School, Peggy and Wayne became aware of the striking contrast between what goes on outside versus inside the protective walls of the school. They were also pleasantly overwhelmed by the energetic greeting received from the children who ran to them, touched them and talked all at once – wanting to know their visitors. A few of the children had never seen light-skinned people.Wayne and Peggy felt greatly blessed as they observed the youngsters studying, listening, playing and eating meals together. It was a privilege to see the love of God meted out through the compassionate words and ways of the teachers and other eduKenya staff. God revealed to them the miracle of His grace in that place.Later that day, as they journeyed away from the school and out of the slum, their previous anxiety was nowhere to be found. Peggy and Wayne still saw scrutiny in the faces they passed, but now they could see the smiles accompanying very different imagined comments and questions, “Hi! Where are you FROM? What’s your NAME? We’re GLAD you’re here! Come back again!”Peggy and Wayne sensed the presence of God in and with the children, teachers and staff at Mawewa School, and even on the streets of Mathare. They realized that God does not need them to accomplish His work in this world, but He has invited them along on His journey to extend His love and grace to a hurting world. Peggy and Wayne, Vision Trip Alumni of 2014, ask, “How cool is that?” Very cool indeed!
