Travel is something my husband, Tom, and I have enjoyed over the past twenty years. Each travel experience is unique and we are continually amazed at the beauty of God’s creation. However, joining an eduKenya Vision Trip to the Mathare slum in Nairobi, Kenya was not on our travel “bucket list.” But God had other plans and sent us to Africa, accompanying us hand-in-hand.We started off the trip on safari, enjoying God’s magnificent creatures, landscapes and sunsets. Returning from the overwhelming beauty of the Kenyan wilds, we then ventured into the middle of the darkness that is the Mathare slum. Nonetheless, even here we witnessed incredible beauty, revealed within the hearts of the people we encountered. They blessed us abundantly and at the end of each home visit, we would pray for God’s blessings and safekeeping for the lovely people we met.God pierced our hearts through the interactions with and smiles of the children at Mawewa School (formerly Kwa Watoto). These children live in deplorable home conditions, but in the midst of all that darkness, in that cramped space of learning, filled with passionate and compassionate teachers and staff, opportunity exists offering a spark of hope for the future.Through the experiences we had and the people we met in Kenya, we returned home richer in relationship within the body of Christ. Tom and I had asked for God to give us a heart for the “least of these” and He changed us forever. We will never be the same. Praise God for bringing these Kenyan brothers and sisters in Christ into our life’s journey. We are dedicated to journeying with them as He brings a present and future hope to Mathare.
